The cost is not decided; it is built. These are the factors that genuinely move it.
A safari in Tanzania does not cost the same as travelling through Japan, nor do the islands of the Indian Ocean compare with a route through Italy. Distance plays a part, as does the cost of living at the destination, the internal logistics and how accessible (or not) that country is for travelling at a certain level. The destination is the first great foundation of the quote.
The same hotel, the same villa or the same lodge can carry very different rates depending on the month. High season, bank holidays, the wildlife-viewing period or the time of best weather push prices up; travelling out of season or adjusting the dates by a few days can change the budget notably without giving up almost anything.
It seems obvious that more days cost more, but pace matters as much as duration. An unhurried journey, with an extra night in each place so you are not living out of a suitcase, is not the same as chaining destinations together. Pace is a decision about comfort, and comfort has a cost.
This is where the needle moves most. A grand city hotel is not the same as a private villa with staff, an exclusive lodge deep in nature or a charming riad. International flights, internal legs, the class in which you travel (economy, premium, business) and sometimes private or light-aircraft flights to reach remote places weigh very differently depending on the destination. On long routes, the class of the flights can be a significant part of the total.
A private guide who speaks your language, a dinner in a place that appears on no website, out-of-hours access to an iconic site, a boat just for you. Private, exclusive experiences are much of what turns a journey into that journey, and they are also a clear variable in the cost.

We also tell you what is not usually included so there is no doubt whatsoever: meals you would rather leave free, personal indulgences, optional insurance or experiences you decide to add along the way. You will always see it in writing. Our rule is simple: no number appears afterwards without your having known about it beforehand.
